Website Design Questions

Alissa Gruby asked:

When you start interviewing website design companies, make sure they can properly help you define your target market. Your website should have search engine optimization in mind while it is being built or re-built. Here are a list of questions that will help you define your target market, and get your website design going in the right direction!

1. Define your primary market (are they male, female, what age, level of eduction, etc.)
2. Define any secondary market (business owners, CEOs, at home moms, college students, etc.)
3. What perception do you want visitors to have when they click into your site?
(such as dependable, high-tech, professional)
4. What message do you want to convey to your visitors about your website?
5. What is your “elevator pitch” summary of your business?
6. What colors should be used and which should be avoided on your website?
7. Do you have a logo? If so, are there any restrictions in using your logo?
8. Do you have a tagline?
9. List 4 websites that you like and define why you like them (not specific to industry)
10. List 2 website that you do NOT like and define why you do not like them (not specific to industry)
11. What keywords would you like to use for search engine optimization?
12. What keyword phrases would you like to use for search engine optimization?

By answering the above questions, it will not only help YOU define who your target market is, but it will also allow your website design company to design with your target market in mind. They will have an understanding of how the website should be built, which navigation ideas to employ and allow their content writers to seed your website with keywords and phrases for search engine optimization (one of several tactics that need to be employed for successful search engine optimization; see my other articles on helping with SEO).
